Took on a lot of fuel at Manning Gorge as with the roads being flooded and very muddy were doing more miles on the Speedo than we really were so it hurt even more when it was $1.10 a litre ( $2.20 a gallon usd. ) which was still cheaper than the Tanami Desert where it was $1.25 but just glad to able to get it.

Coming back out was fun but the price of fuel even back in '97 hurt.

There are a lot of Gorges on the Gibb River road and all had their special charm and of course a good excuse to swim in the heat. Being the start of the wet meant had water falls everywhere and places like Lennard Gorge were much more spectacular then after the wet when it is fall. While swimming there we were able to find a shelf under the rock face where could sit in the shade while still in the cool water. Did have to share the spot with a couple of water dragons though.

Lennard Gorge and one of the many crocs at Windjana.

We slipped and slid ourselves to Windjana Gorge which was one place we did not swim as counted over 20 crocs in and around then waters edge. These were not frighten at all and you could walk right up to within a metre of them but I was not the Crocodile Man that was close enough for me!

Windjana Gorge and entrance to Tunnel Creek.

Made our way down to Tunnel creek which where the water flows right through a mountain and out the other side. I was a great walk through it and was also used by a Aboriginal bush ranger who eluded police here for a long time before being caught. It was then down to Fitzroy River township and a tar road for the first time in over a week as it had recently been completed. Visited Geikie Gorge just out of town which had a nicely shaded picnic area.

Exit at Tunnel Creel and Geikie Gorge.
