Sun setting over Wilpena Pound and our camp at dawn at Stokes lookout.
Leaving Wilpena Pound we were a bit cheeky and camped the night at Stokes lookout. It is a great stop to see the sun go down and a few others came up to do the same thing. Next morning gave us the warm glow of a sunrise you see as well.
Doing the Sky Trek
More and more stations are opening up their station tracks to tourists in the hope of making a few extra dollars to make ends meet. Some like Sky Trek on Willow Springs have even made purpose built tracks just to get the best possible outlooks and adventure along the way. You have to allow 6 hours for this one and they won't even let you start if you don't roll up early enough. You must start before 10.30 am.
Some steep sections on this trek.
You can go straight to the homestead to pick up the key with the permit and a map of the track. They let us leave our trailer behind there and also have a few camping areas too that you can pay to stay at. It cost us $50 to do the trip so it pays to start in time to drive all the tracks available to you too.
Driving along the highest point in the Flinders Rangers and skull rock.
The track is quite steep in places so would not do it without low range just to be friendly on the the car. It is not very testing apart from that as no off camber or large ruts to go over but is slow due to the rocky nature of the place. The track does go to a summit and was the highest point you could reach anywhere in the Flinders Rangers by 4wd but just heard of another place that has cut a track higher still to take the bragging rights away from them. They also show the way to skull rock for any Phantom comic readers that will know of this place to be the hide out for him. But they only let you there if you have started in the morning with enough time left to see it.
